I Am A Girl

Kimsey

Cambodia, 16 years old

As the sun rises over the Mekong River, Kimsey walks back to her home in the slum area of Phnom Penh, after a night of picking up clients who pay her for sex. As she arrives home her mother, frail from diabetes, hands her the baby and asks if she made enough to pay for the medication that keeps her alive. At 14, Kimsey is the sole provider for her month-old baby and mother. As her story unravels over a 2 year period, we learn that Kimsey’s life has taken a turn for the worst with family pressure becoming overwhelming for this teenage girl. Still a child, we watch as Kimsey tries to take control of her destiny as she makes the transition to womanhood. But for Kimsey the path to her chosen future contains insurmountable challenges.
